OUR SCHOOL

Georgia Fulk 12

Cootes Store Graded School is located one fourth mile north of Cootes Store, near the entrance of the historic "Brocks Gap".

It is beautifully situated upon a small elevation overlooking the little village of the same name. In the midst of the most delightful scenery the Valley of Virginia affords to the tourist. It is just about one half mile east of the most noted Gap Rock which is the entrance of Brocks Gap.

First there were only two rooms, these being built in 1913. Later it was found out that there was not enough room to accommodate the large number of pupils that were coming, so they built another room during the year of 1915.

This school is now in charge of Miss Mary Gochenour as principal, Mrs. Dora Gladwell, first assistant and Miss Grace Dove, primary.

The school is progressing nicely with about 95 pupils.

The Schoolhouse is painted white, trimmed in blue. We have about two acres of school ground, which we are very proud of. We have entertainment and school meetings here.

This School is the result of four one roomed schools, vis, Mountain Dale on the north, Valley school on the east, Glass school on south and Chimney Rock school on the west.

We have first recess from 10:30 to 10:40 a.m. Then we have our lessons till time for noon recess, which we have from 12:00 to 1:00. Then next recess we have from 2:30 to 2:40 p.m. We dismiss school in the evening at half past three.
