This Indenture made the Thirtyeth day of August in the year 1830 between John Morris & Anne his wife of the County of Shenandoah and State of Virginia of the one part and Samuel Cootes…….County of Rockingham and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Morris & Anne his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred & fifty dollars lawful…..of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said Samuel Cootes the receipt whereof is hereby axxxxxxxed have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell to the…..uel Cootes and his heirs and assign forever a certain lot or parcel of land near and axxx Town of Harrisonburg in the County of Rockingham aforesaid containing by estimation………..& thirty seven poles be the same more or less bounded as follows to wit Beginning at a stake……….street and Federal Alley, thence with Federal Alley N9 1/2E32 poles to a stake Cxxxx…….and Sprinkels lots and thence S80 1/2E26 poles to a stake west side of the stage………said road on the west side thereof S27W17 poles & 10 links to a stake a corner………………..poles & 15 links to a stake on Wolf Street a corner and with said Strxxx…………….beginning being the lot conveyed by Reuben Harrison & wife……………..conveyance is of record in the…………….since he purchased or exchanged with said………….1827 together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto-----ny wise appertaining to have and to hold the said lot, tract or parcel……..its appurtenances unto the said Samuel Cootes and his heirs & assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Samuel Cootes & his heirs and assigns forever and the said John Morris himself and his heirs executors and administrators doth covenant with the said Samuel Cootes & his heirs executors and administrators the said lot tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances unto the said Samuel Cootes & his heirs and assigns against the claim or claims of them the said John Morris & Anne his wife & other heirs and of all and every person or persons whatever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents. In witness whereof the said John Morris and Anne his wife have hereinto set their hands and seals on the day and year first written.

Shenandoah County Virginia to wit we David Stickley and Joseph S. Spangler Justices of the Peace in the county aforesaid in the state of Virginia do hereby certify that John Morris a party to a certain deed bearing date on the 30th day of August 1830 and herent annexed (the written deed) personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of Rockingham in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 30th day of August 1830. D. Stickley J.S. Spangler

Shenandoah County to wit we David Stickley and Joseph S. Spangler Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid in the state of Virginia do hereby that Anne Morris the wife of John Morris parties to a certain deed bearing date the 30th day of August 1830 and herent annexed personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her she the said Anne Morris acknowledged the same to be her act and deed and declared that she had wittingly signed and delivered the same and that she wishes not to retract it. In the Clerk’s Office of the County Court of Rockingham June 6th 1831 this deed from John Morris & wife to Samuel Cootes was this day presented to me Deputy Clerk of said County and being certified is committed to record. Attest James Clark D.C.R.C.
