Rockingham County DB 15:257 1839 (Incomplete
deed)
[July 15, 1839] the county and state afsd of the other part witnesseth
that the said Samuel Cootes and Emily his wife for and in
consideration of the sum of one dollar to them in hand paid by the said
Jeremiah Fifer the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have
granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell
to the said Jeremiah Fifer a certain tract or parcel of land lying
and being in the county of Rockingham being a part of the land conveyed to
said Cootes by Jacob Trumbo on behalf of the heirs of Peter Fifer
decd lying on the east side of the big road leading from the river to Turley
Town and bounded as follows Beginning at a stake by the side of the
big road S13 1/2W8 poles & 20 links to a stake by the side of the road
thence S29W34 ½ poles to a stone by the side of said road thence with the
widows or dower line S55E7 poles and 22 links to a stake in or land near
the Blacksmith’s Shop corner to the lot said Fifer got of
Christian Horn thence with his line N35 1/2E45 poles and 6 links to a
stake corner thence with his line N61 1/2W15 poles and 17 links to the
beginning containing 2 acres 3 roods and 21 poles......Together with all
and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise
appertaining to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its
appurtenances unto the said Jeremiah Fifer his heirs and assigns
forever, to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Fifer
his heirs and assigns forever and the said Samuel Cootes and Emily
his wife their heirs executors and adminrs do covenant with the said
Jeremiah Fifer his heirs and assigns that they the said Saml Cootes
and Emily his wife their heirs execrs and adminrs the said tract or parcel
of land with its appurtenances unto the said Jeremiah Fifer his
heirs and assigns against the claim or claims of them the said Saml Cootes
& Emily his wife their heirs execrs and adminrs and shall and will
warrant and forever defend by these presents. In testimony whereof the
said Samuel and Emily Cootes have hereunto set their hands and
seals the day and year first above written.
