Harrisonburg Lot
8: Laird to Cootes 1843

This Indenture made the 7th day
of June in the year 1843 between James Laird a……………wife
of the County of Rockingham and State of Virginia of the one part and
Samuel Cootes and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that
said James Laird and Sarah his wi…………in consideration of
the sum of one Dollar lawful money of Virginia to therein hand………..said
Samuel Cootes the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have
granted bargained………..by these presents do grant bargain and sell to
the said Samuel Coots and his heirs……forever a certain lot of
ground with its appurtenances in the town of Harrisonburg pur………….N8
in the south east square it being the same lot which was conveyed to the
said…….by John Dofsey commissioner by Deed of Record in the Clerks
Office of the County of………reference being thereunto tract will more
fully appear and bounded as follows: to wit……….at a stake in the
north east corner of said Lot No 8 and running with Market Street N80 W………..a
stake corner of the lot formerly owned by Anthony Sourbeer thence with the
same S10………2 ½ inches to Smith’s Alley (now Waterman’s) thence
with said Alley S80 E50 feet to a stake Federal Alley and thence with the
said Alley to the beginning Together with and singular the…….. thereto
belonging or any wise appertaining to have and to hold the said lot of
…….with its app……..unto the Samuel Cootes and his heirs and
assign forever to the only proper use and behoof of Samuel Cootes
and his heirs and assigns forever and the said James Laird and
Sarah his wife…….selves and their heirs executors and administrators
doth covenant with the said Samuel heirs executors and administrators the
said lot of ground with its appurtenances unto…….Samuel Coots and his
heirs and assigns against the claim or claims of them the said………and
Sarah his wife and heir and all and every persons whatever shall and
warrant an…………defend by these presents. In witness whereof the
